Elizabeth Macy, a Black woman passing for white in 1946, lives her life on the cusp of reality and dreams. She breaks herself down into thirds, juggling three separate identities for the benefit of others. Eliza, the doting housewife to be to her white fiance Barry Rhodes. Ellie, the passionate hopeless romantic who loves Delilah Graves fiercely. Bes, the troubled daughter of Helen Macy, a woman who is trying her best. That is, until Elizabeth chooses herself. And the choice she makes? It’s almost like flying.     

Very loosely based on the suicide of Evelyn McHale.

As a talented, young Black playwright, Kale clings to her imagination and her affections for famous white men to alleviate the debilitating weight of her depression. Choosing to live in the worlds contrived in her mind, she begins losing touch with reality, including the responsibilities and relationships that come with it. In the midst of her journey for self-preservation, however, she discovers creating fictionalized versions of real people for her own comfort can actually do more harm than good when her fixation turns towards her downstairs neighbor instead of the celebrity men who have no clue she exists.

Mother and daughter relationships are a tricky thing. Mia, a transgender woman, knows all about it. Beginning with Mia's first trip to her childhood home in six years, the events of Mia's life unfold backwards in time, showing how her relationships, especially her relationship with Mama, has shaped her into the woman she is today. But perhaps the most important relationship of all is with Jacob, the person she used to be prior to transitioning.

A mother herself, Marian, is the manager of The Yorkshire Hotel- a quaint bed and breakfast in a sleepy, conservative Michigan town. A kind spirit and the center of local and national controversy, she assists people traveling to Michigan for abortions, giving them free lodging and food, since it is one of few states where the operation is not as harshly regulated. She minds her business, never interfering with her guests...until she meets the clearly troubled Annie.

Mads, a modern day Medusa, finds herself in trouble after the man who's sent to fix the air conditioner triggers deeply rooted trauma in her, trauma that's brought upon by a man named Don (Poseidon) who sexually assaulted her many years ago. It's Mads blind girlfriend, Clara, who reminds Mads she isn't the monster she's come to believe she is.
